Facebook has announced fresh measures to tackle the scourge of bogus news stories which fraudsters have been posting on its site.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, pledged to act to curb those responsible for planting misinformation amid growing anger over the internet hoaxes.
The social networking site has been mired in controversy amid allegations that some stories were planted to influence the outcome of the US presidential election.
Bogus stories included a claim that somebody was paid $3,500 to disrupt a Donald Trump rally. It was published on a meticulously faked ABC News website.
The story went viral and was even picked up by the Trump campaign as it accused the Clinton camp of dirty tricks.
Others claimed Mr Trump had been sending out pornographic tweets and that an FBI agent investigating Hillary Clinton had been found dead.
There have also been bogus stories claiming Mrs Clinton had filed for divorce and that the Pope had endorsed Mr Trump.
Once the stories are posted they can go viral very quickly, not only spreading misinformation but often making money for the fraudsters.
Concerned by the damage the scams have been doing to Facebook’s reputation, Mr Zuckerberg posted on his page that the company took misinformation very seriously.
